The development of new mass timber materials suitable for high-rise construction could see timber, supplemented with cloud-based infrastructure, overtaking concrete construction as the new dominant structural material. Its high strength-to-weight ratio, opportunities for prefabrication and speed of assembly are all assets the material offers, but its greatest benefit may be that it can become a key contributor to a sustainable urban future due to its ability to be regenerated without carbon-intensive processes. This session will explore several developments involving mass timber, including the Oakwood Timber Tower Series, which cites research that says that timber buildings can also result in an overall wellness increases among populace that interact with and observe it.
